S-100 is the new IHO data standard for electronic navigational charts (ENC). Under the IMO ECDIS performance standards, ECDIS supporting S-100 can be used voluntarily from 1 January 2026 and becomes mandatory for new installations from 1 January 2029.
S-100 goes beyond today’s S-57 charts. Alongside the new S-101 ENCs, it brings dynamic data to the bridge – high-resolution bathymetry, changing water levels and surface currents. During the transition, S-57 and S-101 ENCs will be provided in parallel, so new ECDIS must be able to handle both formats.
S-57
One static chart layer: coastline, depth contours, buoys and other charted objects.
- S-57 ENCa single chart layer – no tides, currents or detailed depths
S-100
Several data layers combined into one picture – checked against the vessel’s draught and safety settings.
- S-111surface currents
- S-104changing water levels
- S-102high-resolution bathymetry
- S-101 ENCthe new electronic chart
During the transition, S-57 and S-101 ENCs are provided in parallel – new ECDIS must handle both.
Being ready for S-100 is not just about whether the new charts will display on your ECDIS. What matters is whether your system lets you make full use of everything the new standard offers.
Anschütz is preparing SYNAPSIS ECDIS NX and WECDIS NX for S-100 together with Teledyne SevenCs, following a roadmap aligned with the regulatory timeline. In SYNAPSIS, depth is evaluated against the vessel’s draught and safety settings, water levels are reflected in safety-related calculations and currents are considered in route assessment and manoeuvring – combined into one clear picture for the navigator.
